Design and Build Contract
Construction of a 16,000m2 surface car park at Birmingham Airport.
Very onerous height restrictions resulting from the proximity of the flight path and to avoid breaching navigation lines.
Works had to be undertaken within maximum headroom of 4 metres.
48,000m3 of excavation had to be initially excavated in a manner that no part of any item of plant projected above existing ground. This required the adoption of tightly controlled methods of work.
The existing ground at formation was extremely soft due to its high moisture content. As a result, the ground was cement/lime stabilised to provide suitable CBR values for the pavement construction.
