Brighton & Hove Albion's new stadium has been named as the best new sporting venue in the world at the International Stadium Awards Ceremony in Turin.
The club’s £100 million American Express Community Stadium beat seven other stadia around the world to take home the New Venue Award at the stadium business awards held in Turin, Italy on the 15th May.
The club came out on top ahead of the new home of Italian football giants Juventus, two of the new stadia built in Poland for the Euro 2012 championships and Kansas City Stadium.
Director Martin Perry said: “We were up against some very strong opposition so to win this award is a remarkable achievement and something of which we can all be extremely proud.”
The club were also nominated in three other categories including venue of the year, customer experience and a shortlisting for Martin Perry in the executive of the year category.
This latest award adds to the growing list of accolades already received by the Amex including:
- Structural Steel Design Awards 2011
- Considerate Constructors Bronze Award, 2011 National Finals
- Overall Winner ICE Engineering Excellence Awards 2012
- Best Technical award at the South East Region Building Excellence Awards
The stadium currently has a capacity of 22,500 seats, and recently won planning approval to increase the seating by an extra 8,250 seats. Following the on-time and in budget completion of the main stadium, Buckingham Group is also undertaking the stadium expansion works.
