Design and construction of a 7,500 seat capacity indoor sports arena that hosted handball, basketball, fencing and goalball during both the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Handball Arena, designed to be a permanent facility in legacy, has since been transformed into a Multi-Use Arena, now accommodating a Badminton Court and Gymnasium.

Handball Arena Description:

  • Two temporary warm-up courts- over 1,6000m2 and 10m high
  • 47 internal rooms and 136 toilet cubicles
  • 13,700m2 back-of-house area
  • Specialist retractable lower bowl seating system allowing the venue to have a flexible capacity
  • 3,000m2 of copper cladding to the top section of the Arena, of which 65% is recycled content
  • District heating /cooling
  • Rainwater harvesting system
  • Unique naturally lit roof with roof mounted sun pipes
